The Path of an Innovative Company
From Tap’Touche to interactive whiteboards
De Marque was founded in 1990. We first developed software, including the popular Tap’Touche and educational applications for schools. Over time, the company took larger strides in the distribution of published educational resources and in the digitalization of journals and magazines.
Creation of the Digital Warehouse ANEL-De Marque
In partnership with the National Association of Book Publishers (ANEL), we developed the Digital Warehouse, the first digital book distribution platform in Quebec.
Partnership in France with Eden Livres
Our Cantook platform became the technology used by our partner, Eden Livres (Gallimard, La Martinière and Flammarion) for the distribution of their digital books.
Partnership in Italy with Edigita
Three of the four largest Italian publishing houses, Feltrinelli, Messaggerie Italiane/GEMS, and RCS/Rizzoli, joined together to create a digital warehouse using our technology: the Edigita platform. This was also the year we launched La hutte, an application for purchasing and reading digital books created in collaboration with Mirego.
Creation of the platform Prêtnumérique.ca to loan digital books in libraries; partnership with Apple and Kobo
In collaboration with Quebec’s national library and archives, Quebec’s public libraries, and the BIBLIO Network, we developed and launched the platform prêtnumérique.ca, making digital book loans possible for libraries. This was also the year Apple and Kobo became partners of the Cantook network.
Investment from Eden Livres; partnership with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Cyberlibris, MBJ, Apabi and Tumbz; launch of our e-commerce solution
We sold our top software Tap’Touche in order to concentrate exclusively on digital books and our partner Eden Livres invested $1 million to establish its competitive position on the French-speaking market. This year, we created partnerships with Amazon (Canada and EU), Barnes & Noble, Cyberlibris, MBJ, Apabi and Tumbz, a social network designed to help users to find new cultural products. We also developed and launched our e-commerce solution, allowing publishers to sell digital books directly on their websites.
New visual identity; founding member of the Readium Foundation; partnership with Bookwire and Sony.
This year marked a new visual identity, a new website, and new members on our team. De Marque became one of the founding members of the Readium Foundation. The Readium Foundation’s main goal is to develop an ePub digital reader optimized for mobile applications. We also partnered with the German company Bookwire to distribute digital books in Germany. Sony has also been added to partner retail outlets to distribute digital books in Canada and the United States through the Sony Reader Store.
Agreement concluded with Libranda in Spain; the cities of Grenoble, Edmonton and Brussels adopt Cantook Station
De Marque concludes an important agreement with Libranda, the digital distribution and promotion body comprised of 75 major Spanish publishing houses, to supply the Cantook technology to Libranda and its clients. De Marque also acquires a stake in the share capital of Libranda. The Cantook Station solution is adopted by libraires outside the province of Québec, and internationally : the Bibliothèque municipale de Grenoble, the Edmonton Public Library and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles all chose the Cantook Station e-lending technology. The PRETNUMERIQUE.CA platform achieved a milestone: one million loans have been recorded since the launch of the service. Apple certifies De Marque as an approved aggregator for iBooks.
